Spoon Care Guide

•       How to care for your wooden spoon

  • A hand-carved wooden spoon is not fragile. It is made from hardwood dense enough to build furniture with. The only enemies are prolonged water exposure, dishwashers, and neglect. Follow these simple steps and your spoon will outlast every other kitchen tool you own.

  • Washing — Always wash by hand in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately with a tea towel. Never leave the spoon soaking in water and never put it in a dishwasher. The prolonged heat and moisture of a dishwasher will crack even the best hardwood.

  • Drying and storage — Stand the spoon upright in a utensil holder or lay it flat in a dry drawer. Avoid leaving it flat on a wet surface. The wood needs airflow on all sides.

  • Oiling — Every 2–3 months, apply a small amount of linseed or walnut oil (available at any pharmacy or kitchen shop) to the entire surface of the spoon. Work it in with your fingers or a soft cloth, leave for 20 minutes, then wipe off the excess. This keeps the wood hydrated and prevents surface checking (small cracks along the grain). A freshly oiled spoon will look almost new.

  • How long will it last? — With basic care, a well-made hardwood spoon will last 20–30 years or more. Many customers have spoons that have been in daily use for years and show little signs of wear.
